Arthur Preston (bishop)

Born in 1883 into a distinguished family〔His brother Sir Walter was the Member of Parliament for Mile End then Cheltenham between the wars -Who was Who” 1897-1990 London, A & C Black, 1991 ISBN 0-7136-3457-X〕 and educated at Charterhouse and University College, Oxford, he was ordained in 1905. His first post was at ''St Mark’s, Plumstead ''〔(Details of parish )〕 after which he was Vicar at ''St James the Great, Bethnal Green ''.〔(History of church )〕 A much respected Rural Dean of Lewisham and later Archdeacon of Lewisham〔Who’s Who (ibid)〕 he was appointed a Cathedral Canon by the Bishop of Southwark in 1930 and Suffragan Bishop two years later.
